🧪 TESTING RECOMMENDATIONS

Device Types to Test

✓ Low-end (1-2GB RAM): Verify no OOM, smooth playback
✓ Mid-range (4GB RAM): Verify good performance, battery life
✓ High-end (8GB+ RAM): Verify quality maintained, smooth UI

Test Scenarios

✓ Cold startup time (measure app launch to UI visible)
✓ Tab switching (verify instant, preserve state)
✓ Live TV category (measure load, verify single request)
✓ Search (type quickly, verify smooth)
✓ Video playback (test on different bitrates)
✓ Player exit (verify no crashes)
✓ Long sessions (2-3 hours, monitor memory)

Metrics to Monitor

✓ App startup time (should be 3-5s cold, <1s warm)
✓ Memory usage (should stay <500MB)
✓ Network requests (should be <50/session)
✓ Crashes (should be 0%)
✓ Battery drain (should be <20%/hour)
✓ Smooth playback (should be jank-free)

⚠️ DEFER ED OPTIMIZATIONS (P2-3,4,5)

These medium-impact fixes were deferred for later optimization cycles:

  1. P2-3: Movies Tab Retry Loop Fix (exponential backoff)
  2. P2-4: HeroCarousel Auto-Play Pause (when off-screen)
  3. P2-5: Hive Boxes Lifecycle Management (proper closing)

Expected impact if implemented: Additional 5-10% performance improvement.

📝 ARCHITECTURE IMPROVEMENTS

Before

EPG Loading: 50-200 concurrent HTTP requests per category
Cache Strategy: Destructive (delete on startup)
Tab Navigation: Destroy/recreate on each switch
Search Input: Per-keystroke setState (full rebuild)
Image Cache: Full resolution, no size limits
DNS Resolution: Two separate implementations, separate caches
Video Buffer: Fixed 100MB (causes OOM on low-end)

After

EPG Loading: 1 batch request per category + cache
Cache Strategy: TTL-based (preserve valid data)
Tab Navigation: IndexedStack (keep all alive)
Search Input: Debounced 500ms (single rebuild)
Image Cache: Display-sized, 200MB limit
DNS Resolution: Unified service, shared cache
Video Buffer: Device-aware (20-100MB adaptive)

🎓 LESSONS LEARNED

Performance Patterns Applied

  1. Batch Operations - One request for many items (EPG)
  2. Caching with TTL - Preserve data, invalidate on expiry
  3. Debouncing - Reduce rebuild frequency (search)
  4. Size Limiting - Constrain resource usage (images)
  5. Unification - Single source of truth (DNS)
  6. Device Awareness - Graceful degradation (buffer)
  7. State Preservation - Keep UI alive (IndexedStack)

Code Quality Improvements

  • Reduced code duplication (DNS implementations)
  • Improved resource management (image cache, Hive boxes)
  • Better error handling (fallbacks, TTL)
  • Enhanced debugging (cache stats, device profile)

🚀 NEXT STEPS

Immediate (This Session)

  • Test on real device (low-end, mid-range, high-end)
  • Verify metrics match expectations
  • Document actual vs. predicted improvements

Short Term (1-2 weeks)

  • Deploy to beta testers
  • Monitor crash reports
  • Gather performance feedback
  • Implement P2-3,4,5 if needed
